City of Kent and Kent Lions Club announce collaboration to enhance Kent Cornucopia Days

Kent, WA –  January 30, 2006 – The City of Kent is pleased to announce a new collaboration with the Kent Lions Club and Cornucopia Days.  In 2006, Kent’s annual Canterbury Arts Festival will bid the community farewell and City staff that have organized the event will team with the Lions Club to bring arts activities to Cornucopia Days.

“Canterbury Arts Festival has provided the Kent community with arts and entertainment for 19 years, and the time has now come to bring the event to a close,” Ronda Billerbeck, Cultural Programs Manager for the City of Kent said.  "Our new partnership with Cornucopia Days will maximize available funding and unite efforts to create a high quality event for festival attendees.”

Beginning this summer, the Kent Arts Commission and Kent Parks, Recreation and Community Services will replace Canterbury’s arts activities by producing main stage entertainment, organizing a children’s area and bringing a variety of other arts and cultural elements to Kent’s popular Cornucopia Days festival.  “We are looking forward to working with the Kent Lions Club to build on the past successes of Cornucopia Days,” Billerbeck said.  “Adding arts and multicultural elements will enhance the existing festivities and solidify Cornucopia Days as a destination event for both Kent’s residents and visitors.”

The Kent Lions Club, an all-volunteer service organization, produces Kent Cornucopia Days.  Bill Westcott, long-time Lions Club member and Cornucopia Days Festival Director worked closely with City staff to develop the new collaboration.  “We already have a great working relationship with City staff,” Westcott said.  “This partnership will strengthen efforts of both the Lions Club and the City to benefit the citizens of the greater Kent community.”

The 2006 Kent Cornucopia Days is scheduled for Friday, July 14 through Sunday, July 16.  More detailed event information will be available in the coming months at www.ci.kent.wa.us/arts and www.kcdays.com, or by calling the City of Kent Cultural Programs office at (253) 856-5050 or the Kent Lions at (253) 852-LION.
